South West Specialised Commissioning Group

The South West Specialised Commissioning Group (SCG) is one of 10 such groups established across England. The SCG works on behalf of 14 Primary Care Trusts within the South West and its boundaries are the same as those for the South West Strategic Health Authority.

In line with the transition arrangements for the NHS the 14 Primary care Trusts in the South West were grouped into 7 clusters. As set out in the NHS Operating Framework 2011/12, all Primary Care Trusts retain their statutory powers and obligations, but can work together as a “cluster” under a single Chief Executive and single management team. The new clusters are not statutory bodies but are necessary to support the transition process and deliver the new healthcare landscape set out in the Government White Paper, Equity and Excellence, Liberating the NHS.

The South West Specialised Commissioning Group is hosted by NHS Bristol, which is clustered with NHS North Somerset and NHS South Gloucestershire.

Each SCG covers a population of between 3 and 7 million, with the population that the South West SCG serves just over 5 million.
